FOR 274: Forest Health consists of an extensive field examination of a wide range of prominent forest health agents and conditions. This includes field recognition, biology, ecological role and forest management implications of various forest insects, fungi and abiotic agents. Other topics include the recognition and management of invasive weed species, assessment of forest health agents in conjunction with silviculture surveys and harvesting prescriptions, management of root diseases and assessment of bark beetle occurrences.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of required first year courses.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- identify field occurrences of common or important forest health agents including insects, disease, invasive species, animal damage and abiotic injuries;
- assess stand and landscape hazard and risk for selected forest damage agents;
- make management decisions regarding treatment of various forest damage agents;
- diagram and explain the life cycles of selected forest diseases and insects;
- access printed and electronic information and expertise to assist in the identification, evaluation and management of forest health agents;
- assess and record forest health information in conjunction with forest management assessment activities;
- discuss forest health related issues in the context of climate change; and
- communicate effectively on forest health issues within the forestry profession.
