NUCL 180 Practicum

NUCL 180: Practicum provides the learner with a consolidated clinical experience where they can apply theory from the Nursing Unit Clerk program. Students work full shifts with an experienced Nursing Unit Clerk.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of all theory courses in the NUC program: NUCL 146, NUCL 152, NUCL 154, NUCL 156, NUCL 162, NUCL 164, NUCL 166, NUCL 168 and NUCL 170.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. communicate verbally using language appropriate to the situation;
  2. evaluate situations, make informed decisions, and initiate appropriate actions;
  3. transfer skills and knowledge from one situation to another;
  4. perform tasks within a reasonable time frame for a beginning NUC, showing organizational skills;
  5. cope effectively with assigned tasks amid usual distractions and stressors of the nursing unit;
  6. maintain ethical standards with respect to privacy, confidentiality and personal behavior; and
  7. display a professional demeanor at all times.
  8. use active listening skills to record and relay verbal messages accurately;
  9. interact appropriately and efficiently with other hospital departments;
  10. correctly use technology associated with the job (e.g. computers, fax machines, photocopiers, and telephone);
  11. transcribe information accurately and legibly;
  12. accurately requisition/enter physicians’ orders;
  13. maintain patient charts and records, meeting legal standards;
  14. apply problem-solving techniques to effectively deal with a variety of situations;
  15. work collaboratively and cooperatively with the health team members on the unit;
