AHSC 228 Health Sciences IV: Pathophysiology and Pharmacology is a continuation of AHSC 218. The major emphasis is on the study of how homeodynamics is altered by physical, biochemical microbial, genetic, nutritional or immunologic factors. This course will examine the presentation and pathogenesis of disease, the impact of disease on homeodynamics, diagnostics, and the pharmacological management of selected health challenges. Where appropriate nutrition, genetics, and environmental impacts on health will be drawn through the major concepts of this course. Topics will be closely coordinated with the practice and the health and healing courses.

Prerequisites: AHSC 218 with a minimum of 60%.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. identify and define basic terms relating to health challenges associated with the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the pancreas, the liver, and the kidney.
  2. identify and describe pathophysiological processes and changes that occur in the body related to the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the pancreas, the liver, and the kidney.
  3. analyze the processes that lead to cell injury and identify appropriate treatments for health challenges associated with the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the pancreas, the liver, and the kidney.
  4. describe the characteristics of prototype drugs for each drug classification covered in this course.
  5. describe basic diagnostic testing methods relating to health challenges associated with the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the pancreas, the liver, and the kidney.
  6. identify normal and abnormal results of diagnostic tests related to health challenges associated with the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the pancreas, the liver, and the kidney.
  7. apply knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology and diagnostics to health challenges relating to diabetes, the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, the liver, and the kidney.
  8. apply and reflect on the team process to achieve collaborative learning outcomes.
