EASL 036 Intermediate Writing: Expressing Ideas

EASL 036  Intermediate Writing: Expressing Ideas provides students who speak English as an additional language with instruction in writing and opportunities to write at an intermediate level. This course helps students to develop their ability to write accurate, simple, compound and complex sentences. Students learn to apply components of the writing process to produce clear, well-structured expository paragraphs (e.g. descriptive and narrative) that express meaningful ideas. Students are also introduced to multi-paragraph writing. Students keep weekly journals to write about their experiences.

Prerequisites: EASL 026 a minimum of 60%, or equivalent skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. produce simple, compound and some complex sentences with acceptable word order patterns.
  2. maintain unity and some coherence in paragraph writing by incorporating connectors and transition devices.
  3. write a variety of expository paragraphs.
  4. apply some grammatical systems and rules to writing.
  5. use the writing process to plan and revise work.
  6. self-correct some frequent grammatical and lexical errors.
  7. write a basic summary of a paragraph.
  8. complete functional writing tasks to meet personal and academic needs.
