GNUR 501 Psychosocial Issues Impacting Aging. As people age, explores how cognitive and affective function can be impacted by life events, transitions, role change, personal choice and behaviour, acute and chronic disease, or environmental stressors as people age. With a view to helping the older individual attain their optimal level of wellness, participants in this course will explore those psychosocial issues through the lens of Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. Gerontological nurses Students will develop strategies to assess a client's coping ability, identify risk factors that undermine independence and well-being, and promote psychosocial health.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Incorporate the strengths and limitations of two gerontological theories: the Hierarchy of Needs Theory (Maslow) & the Successful Aging Theory (Lange).
- explain the psychosocial pressures that may impede forward movement towards successful aging by discussing how they affect an older adult’s physical, mental and emotional health and safety.
- discover the complex issues faced by elders who are living with chronic disease and psychosocial challenges.
- identify risk factors that may cause a change in an older adult’s mental and emotional status.
- describe common chronic conditions that have psychosocial consequences in later life: rheumatoid diseases, gout, Herpes Zoster, COPD, fecal incontinence, HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, Parkinson’s Disease, insomnia and sleep disorders, dementia.
- share assessment tools appropriate to the challenges we will be discussing.
