GNUR 514 End of Life Care explores how palliative care is the unique way caregivers think, respond, and act as they give skilled and compassionate care to a dying person and the support system of that person. This course begins by helping each nurse understand their own personal and cultural perceptions of death and palliation by reflecting on their experiences with dying people. After exploring the concept of a Palliative Approach each participant will gain specific and current knowledge about symptom assessment and management, and how to deal with selected palliative emergency situations. Particularly unique aspects of caring for the dying eg, family care, communication, grief, and self-care will be explored.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- examine their personal feelings about working with the dying.
- depict the unique aspects of a Palliative Approach and intervention.
- explain the multiple uses of the Palliative Performance Scale and the Psychosocial PPS.
- demonstrate proficiency in symptom control for pain, GI symptoms, and dyspnea.
- identify the signs and symptoms of terminal delirium.
- discuss the effects of living with profound fatigue.
- identify key signs and symptoms of select palliative emergencies and describe appropriate interventions for select palliative emergencies.
- evaluate the impact that feelings of hope, depression, and suffering have on the dying client and their family.
- summarize three models of grief and bereavement including ways to reach out to the client or family during this time.
- explore cultural needs and personal rituals in the last days and hours of life and beyond.
