GNUR 530 Physical Aging and Chronic Disease Management Part 2 is a continuation of GNUR 440. In this course learners will explore age-related changes and commonly occurring diseases of the cardio-vascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. Using Miller’s (2015) Nursing Model for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults, learners will identify cumulative risk factors for onset of disease and/or disability, complications arising in all domains of holism, and subsequent negative functional consequences. Learners will explore the pharmacological approach to disease management and health promotion. Using Maslow, Erikson, and Lange’s theories, inter-professional and nursing actions aimed at limiting potential negative functional consequences into older age will be explored. Additional systems will be explored in GNUR 540.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of all courses in Semester 2 of the Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- create care-plans for older adults using Miller’s 2015 “Nursing Model for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults” framework.
- describe age-related changes that occur in the cardiovascular, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems.
- identify risk factors for disease/injury in systems being explored.
- explore the biophysiological and psychosocial impacts (functional consequences) of aging and system- specific diseases on the older adult.
- identify clients at risk for negative functional consequences using various screening tools.
- select intervention strategies that minimize the risk for negative outcomes for case-based clients.
- select appropriate pain assessment and management strategies for older adults with disease specific challenges.
- describe situations in which anticipatory planning and education is required.
- identify special considerations related to the pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacotherapeutic aspects of specific drug therapies used to treat systems-specific diseases in older adults.
- develop care-planning approaches that reflect client and family centred care.
- make clinical decisions in care planning and care delivery using evidence-based rationales.
- evaluate whether interventions have achieved the desired therapeutic outcomes.
- identify personal competency development needs using self-reflection.
