BKMA 125 Blacksmithing Foundations will develop students’ ability to manipulate hot steel with hammer and anvil, with an emphasis on hammer control and safe tool use. Students will apply a variety of basic blacksmithing techniques in the completion of simple projects.
Prerequisites: BKMA 121, BKMA 123

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Perform basic forging techniques such as drawing out, upsetting, fullering, cutting, splitting, punching, bending, twisting, and heat-treating steel
- Identify varieties of steel and iron for different applications
- Communicate using the terminology of blacksmithing
- Recreate a demonstrated metal art process or technique
- Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with studio specific health and safety policies
