FOR 251 Silviculture II; this course prepares students for employment in the forest industry of British Columbia through instruction in silvicultural theory and the application of silvicultural practices. Biological, ecological, operational and economic considerations will be presented. The emphasis of this course is on reforestation, silviculture systems, stand management and crop planning techniques (spacing, commercial thinning, pruning, fertilization), and developing a defensible Site Plan.
Prerequisites: FOR 250 with a minimum of 60%

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Develop various stand tending prescriptions and understand how to administer a typical stand tending contract including quality control monitoring
- Understand the various stand tending treatments and the tools used to determine treatment options
- Prepare and defend a preliminary cutting permit phase of a Forest Stewardship Plan
- Identify and compare the different silviculture systems and how they may be used in different ecosystems and forest types
- Prepare and defend a Site Plan to the standards required in the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and Regulations
- Participate in a week long field trip focusing on coastal ecosystems, operations and First nations
