GNUR 430 Introduction to Gerontological Nursing.  This course will provide students with the opportunity to explore the unique roles, functions, skillset, and theoretical perspectives of the Canadian trained gerontological nurse. Students will explore current and future demographic shifts, social impacts and needs, and current issues facing older adults. Students will also explore the Canadian standards for gerontological care with a keen focus on promoting wellness. Standards will be critically applied to learning activities in preparation for moving into a variety of practice settings in future courses.  Students will be introduced to evidence-based practice assessment tools and analyse their usefulness in planning and delivering care to clients in various stages of health and wellness.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. explain the prominent theories of aging and how they inform nursing practice.
  2. apply the Nursing Model for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults to case-based scenarios.
  3. apply the Canadian Gerontological Nurse’s Association (CGNA) standards to case-based scenarios.
  4. contrast failure-to-thrive, frailty, and hardiness.
  5. identify and apply relevant geriatric assessment and/or screening tools to case-based scenarios.
  6. explain the key elements of adequate nutrition in later life.
  7. describe the impact of trauma on health through the lifespan.
  8. plan health promotion strategies using Millers Wellness Model.
  9. identify nursing care outcomes that indicate that a therapeutic intervention has achieved the desired client outcome.
  10. identify personal competency development needs using self-reflection.
