GNUR 443 Delirium, Dementia and Depression in the Elderly will provide learners with the opportunity to explore the neurocognitive conditions of delirium, dementia and depression with a focus on examining theories of etiology, pathophysiology, and presenting signs and symptoms. Clinical assessments and treatment options will be explored as well as interprofessional healthcare interventions and nursing approaches to support functional capacity and minimize negative functional outcomes. This course will also explore the impact of these conditions on the family and professional caregivers.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- create critically informed care-plans for older adults with depression, delirium, and dementia using Miller’s (2015) Nursing Model for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults framework.
- describe modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for the onset of depression, delirium, dementia, and dementia subtypes in older adults.
- describe potential positive and negative impacts of societal and caregiver attitudes on the mental health of older adults with neurocognitive decline.
- compare and contrast the etiology, pathophysiology, presentation, and treatment options for depression, delirium, dementia, and dementia subtypes.
- use neurocognitive and risk assessment tools to plan interventions for older adults with symptoms of neurocognitive decline.
- select strategies to minimize negative functional consequences and optimize positive functional outcomes in case-based clients.
- create client-specific care plans based on the Global Deterioration Scale classification criteria.
- compare and contrast current pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for depression, delirium, dementia, and dementia subtypes.
- select appropriate evidence-based interventions for the management of aggression, labile mood, suicidal behaviour, and paranoia.
- describe the psycho-social and psycho-emotional impact of delirium, depression and dementia on family members and care-givers.
- provide evidence-informed rationale for simulated care-planning decisions.
