HSER 257 Mental Health Issues: Practical Responses

HSER 257 Mental Health Issues: Practical Responses provides instruction in a variety of rehabilitative and treatment modalities used in work with marginalized populations. Attitudes toward mental health and substance use problems and how they impact helper effectiveness are explored in a supportive milieu. Evidence-based practices such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Harm Reduction are used as frameworks for the development of skills and knowledge. Students are introduced to strategies for overcoming stigma and supporting client empowerment in a variety of community and facility settings. Pre-requisites: ENGL 12 or equivalent

Prerequisites: English Studies 12 or equivalent

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  4. Describe and explain the importance of building and working with the strengths and abilities of each youth or adult
  5. Facilitate recovery through interventions that help people re-establish normal roles in the community
  6. Respond effectively in crisis situations
  7. Support youth and adults to reduce harms and minimize risks
  8. Use practical problem-solving and negotiation strategies
  9. Support youth and adults to access needed services and supports
  10. Identify life skill deficit areas and support the development of healthy lifestyle practices
  11. Understand the difference between support and enabling
  12. Empower self and others
  13. Communicate constructively and effectively
