NURS 116 Health and Healing I: Living Health is an introduction to the meaning of health including personal health, family health, community health and societal health. Participants examine significant theoretical and conceptual frameworks of health including health promotion, primary health care, prevention and determinants of health. By reflecting on personal experiences, participants will have the opportunity to identify personal resources and/or challenges that impact health as well as recognize the diversity of beliefs, values and perceptions of health held by others. Opportunities to learn basic health assessment skills are included in this course.

Prerequisites: Admission to the nursing program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Relate personal meaning and definitions of health and wellness to client care
  2. Name and define the social determinants of health, models of health and health prerequisites
  3. Relate the social determinants of health and health prerequisites to the wider context of health
  4. Explain and apply the concept of epidemiology in nursing
  5. Examine the foundations of primary health care in nursing
  6. Examine the definitions of family as client in nursing and apply family theory in nursing practice
  7. Examine the definitions of community as client in nursing and apply community theory in nursing practice
  8. Summarize and examine levels of prevention in nursing practice
  9. Examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of health promotion theory in nursing practice locally, nationally and globally
  10. Examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of population health theory in nursing practice locally, nationally and globally
  11. Examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of diversity in nursing practice locally, nationally and globally
  12. Review critical social theory and apply it to the concept of social justice
  13. Examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of global health issues
  14. Review health promotion and apply it to the concept of complementary therapies in nursing practice
  15. Relate knowledge about human anatomy and physiology to physical assessment
  16. Utilize effective communication techniques to obtain a patient health history
  17. Apply knowledge of subjective and objective assessment to case studies and focused physical examinations
  18. Demonstrate how to perform accurate physical assessments on integumentary, abdominal & musculoskeletal body systems
  19. Evaluate teaching needs of patients in case scenarios
  20. Illustrate how to maintain infection control by following standard precautions and performing proper hand hygiene
  21. Utilize focused assessment tools for assessment of specific problems (nutrition assessment, cognitive assessment, sleep assessment)
  22. Make use of safe body mechanics during all patient assessment and care
