IPHE 513 End-Of-Life Care & Palliation

IPHE 513: End-of-Life Care and Palliation begins by helping each participant understand their own perceptions of death and palliation by reflecting on their experiences with dying people. Palliative care is the unique way caregivers think, respond, and act as they give skilled and compassionate care to a dying person and the support system of that person. After exploring the concept of a Palliative Approach, each participant will gain specific and current knowledge about symptom assessment and management, and how to deal with selected palliative emergency situations. Essential aspects of caring for the dying, including family care, communication, grief, and self-care are also explored.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. articulate their personal feelings about working with the dying and their families;
  2. identify ways to be sensitive to the unique cultural needs and personal rituals in the last days and hours of death and beyond.
  3. examine the unique aspects of a Palliative Approach and intervention;
  4. explain the multiple uses of the Palliative Performance Scale and the family Psychosocial PPS;
  5. display proficiency in symptom control for pain, GI symptoms, and dyspnea through completion of case examples and treatment problems;
  6. identify the signs and symptoms of terminal delirium;
  7. describe interventions for select palliative emergencies;
  8. reflect on the impact that hope, depression, and suffering have on the dying client and their family;
  9. recognize the psychosocial needs of the dying and their families;
  10. discern the different types of grief and bereavement and how to reach out to the client or family during this time; and
