NURS 219 Nursing Practice III: Promoting Health & Healing. This nursing practice experience provides opportunities for learners to develop caring relationships with individuals and families for the purpose of health promotion while coming to understand their health and healing processes when experiencing more complex health challenges, both episodic and chronic. Participants will have opportunities to practice nursing approaches that accompany this understanding. Participants work with families and individuals in acute care medical settings to incorporate concepts and learning from all courses in this semester into their nursing practice. The community and society are considered as contextual influences on the promotion of health for the individual and the family.

Prerequisites: BIOL 165, NURS 122, NURS 126, NURS 129, NURS 130, and INDG 302 all with a minimum grade of 60%

Corequisite: Year 2 Nursing Courses

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Apply theory from studies in Health and Healing, Relational Practice, Pathophysiologic, Microbiologic, and Pharmacologic Concept Application, elective courses and previous practice courses to their nursing practice in an acute care medical setting
  2. Demonstrate safe, professional nursing practice
  3. Demonstrate awareness of scope of practice in a nursing practice setting
  4. Apply principles of teaching and learning in the context of client and family education
  5. Involve patient and/or family when designing and implementing care
  6. Apply critical thinking, clinical judgment, organizational and decision-making skills when caring for clients in a variety of situations
  7. Utilizes assessment data from a variety of interprofessional team members when providing care for clients with chronic and episodic health challenges
  8. Identify appropriate rationale when performing psychomotor skills
  9. Perform psychomotor skills safely and skillfully
  10. Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with the interprofessional health care team when making decisions to ensure patient-centred care
  11. Integrate knowledge and skills for effective communication and collaboration in interprofessional and intraprofessional practice
  12. Adapt their approach to client assessments in order to effectively assess clients in a variety of situations
  13. Develop relationships with health team members, which foster confidence and ability to provide safe nursing care, which foster confidence and ability to provide safe nursing care

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
