This course celebrates the human imagination. We will explore provocative ideas as expressed through contemporary short stories and novels. Students will further develop their ability to interpret texts, develop arguments, and write academic essays about those texts.
Prerequisites: ENGL 112 with a grade of �B� or higher, or written permission of the Instructor and School Chair.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- To establish personal aesthetics with regards to short stories and novels.
- To develop a discipline of reading and writing that is sound and sustainable.
- To develop a healthy practice of response, analysis, and critique.
- To write thoughtfully about literature.
- To identify significant themes and connections between literature and identity, race, gender, sexuality, socio-economic, and political issues.
Additional Assessment Notes: Letter grades of C- to A+, P (pass), and F (fail) will be used. "I" (incomplete) may be temporarily given to the student who is unable to complete course assignments by the end of the semester because of illness or another valid reason, but only after consultation with the instructor. A "W" (withdraw) can be obtained by withdrawing from the course before the College deadline for withdrawals.
