IPHE 400: Inter-professional Care of the Older Adult will detail the unique roles and functions of geriatric care by exploring historical underpinnings, societal needs, and current issues. Two conceptual models for care of acutely ill, chronically ill or frail elders will provide students with the foundation for application of assessment tools and critical analysis. A focus on health promotion and wellness in later life will guide and direct student's leadership in the care of older adults. Web, electronic and journal resources that support the student's practice will be identified.
Prerequisites: Admission to the Gerontology Program. GERO 200. Note: pre-requisite(s) may be waived with the permission of the Instructor.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- debate foundational biological, psychological and sociological theories about why people age;
- discuss and debate the ways our current health care system is failing the elderly; and
- evaluate the unique contributions of inter-professional perspectives in geriatric care.
- identify factors that promote or enhance longevity, health and well-being in later life;
- identify the basic concepts, principles, strengths and gaps in numerous gerontological models;
- define the terms "Best Practice", "Evidence-based Practice", "Clinical Pathways" and "Clinical Practice Guidelines" and differentiate between them;
- compare and contrast components of the concepts: Failure to Thrive, Frailty, Coping, Hardiness, Successful Aging;
- debate whether Failure to Thrive is a symptom, a syndrome or a legitimate diagnosis for regressive change in later life;
- identify the "Geriatric Giants" and syndromes that may undermine health and function in later life;
- apply the key components of a comprehensive geriatric health assessment;
- analyze atypical presentations of health changes in the elderly to case scenarios;
