IPHE 401 Spirituality In Aging

IPHE 401 Spirituality and Aging. As the physical body ages it declines and deteriorates. In contrast, the human spirit continues to develop and mature until the end of life. Participants in this course will examine the importance of spirituality in aging, and its positive effects on health, wellness and achievement of meaning in life. Conversely, suffering or spiritual distress can rob an older adult of the older adult of the opportunity to end life peacefully and geriatric practitioners must know how to respond. Roles and opportunities for caregivers to promote and support the spirituality of aging persons will be explored. Research methods and assessment tools to assess spiritual needs will be examined.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. critically and thoughtfully examine definitions of religion, spirituality, spiritual well-being and spiritual distress;
  2. discuss how and why spirituality becomes more important to health and wellness in later life;
  3. describe the spiritual needs of people in later life, how these needs can be met;
  4. determine the positive benefits of prayer, ritual and hope on health and wellbeing;
  5. discuss the importance of ‘finding meaning’ or obtaining gerotranscendence in later life;
  6. examine the concept of ‘dark night of the soul’ and suffering, and its impact on quality- of- life;
  7. explore how spirituality and spiritual wellness can be assessed and measured;
  8. examine the role of the professional caregiver in encouraging older people to develop, express, and value their spirituality; and
  9. evaluate the importance of spirituality as a strength or coping mechanism during palliation.
