MATH 140: Calculus I for Social Sciences is an introductory course in calculus designed to provide students majoring in business, the life sciences or the social sciences with the necessary mathematical background for further study in these areas. The course includes functions, limits, the derivative and its application, anti-differentiation and the indefinite integral and an introduction to differential equations.
Prerequisites: Principles of Math 12 or Math 110 or equivalent with grade of "C" or better. Note: Pre-requisite(s) may be waived with the permission of the Instructor.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- calculate limits of functions graphically and algebraically;
- use the definition of the derivative to find the derivative of a function;
- calculate derivatives using formulas such as the product rule and chain rule;
- use first and second derivatives to accurately sketch the graph of a function;
- apply calculus techniques to solve a min/max problem;
- solve problems involving exponential growth and decay; and
- solve integral problems using anti-derivatives and such techniques as substitution and parts.
