MHAD 501 - Mental Health and Addictions II. This course is a continuation of Mental Health and Addictions I and focuses on a variety of rehabilitative and treatment modalities used in working with older adults.� Attitudes toward mental health and substance use problems and how they impact helper effectiveness are explored in a supportive milieu.
Prerequisites: Completion of Year 1 of the Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing; MHAD 500

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- advocate for elders to access needed services and supports;
- empower older adults to reduce harms and minimize risk associated with mental health and substance use issues;
- describe and explain the importance of building and working with the strengths and abilities of each person;
- use motivational strategies with each person based on their own unique strengths and needs;
- use practical problem-solving and negotiation strategies especially when dealing with challenging personalities;
- identify and address life skill deficit areas and support the development of healthy lifestyle practices;
- facilitate recovery through interventions that help people re-establish normal roles within their environment; and
- respond effectively in crisis.
