NURS 116: Health and Healing I: Living Health is an introduction to the meaning of health including personal health, family health, community health and societal health. Participants examine significant theoretical and conceptual frameworks of health including health promotion, primary health care, prevention and determinants of health. By reflecting on personal experiences, participants will have the opportunity to identify personal resources and/or challenges that impact health as well as recognize the diversity of beliefs, values and perceptions of health held by others. Opportunities to learn basic health assessment skills are included in this course.
Prerequisites: Admission to the nursing program.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- elate personal meaning and definitions of health and wellness to client care;
- examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of population health theory in nursing practice locally, nationally and globally;
- examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of diversity in nursing practice locally, nationally and globally;
- review critical social theory and apply it to the concept of social justice;
- examine and demonstrate an evolving understanding of global health issues;
- review health promotion and apply it to the concept of complementary therapies in nursing practice;
- relate knowledge about human anatomy and physiology to physical assessment;
- utilize effective communication techniques to obtain a patient health history;
- apply knowledge of subjective and objective assessment to case studies and focused physical examinations;
- demonstrate how to perform accurate physical assessments on integumentary, abdominal & musculoskeletal body systems;
- evaluate teaching needs of patients in case scenarios;
- name and define the social determinants of health, models of health and health prerequisites;
- illustrate how to maintain infection control by following standard precautions and performing proper hand hygiene;
- utilize focused assessment tools for assessment of specific problems (nutrition assessment, cognitive assessment, sleep assessment); and
- make use of safe body mechanics during all patient assessment and care.
