PTEC 224 Non-Sterile Compounding

PTEC 224: Non-Sterile Compounding is an experiential lab course in which students learn the skills and best practices for compounding non-sterile products including ingredient calculations, measurements, and preparation techniques for creams, ointments, solutions, and suspensions. Students use compounding formulas and drug stability and drug compatibility reference materials in the preparation of products with an emphasis on accuracy and safety. Maintenance of compounding equipment and workspace utilization are integrated into the learning activities.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Semester 3 in the PTEC Program

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. demonstrate professionalism by upholding standards of practice, codes of ethics, and policies;
  2. apply federal and provincial regulations to promote safe practice and privacy;
  3. perform accurate calculations and technical assessments;
  4. apply compounding formulas accurately in the preparation of topical, oral and specialty products;
  5. identify common medication safety issues, medication incidents and near misses associated with compounding;
  6. utilize reference materials and resources to support evidence-based decision making and accurate compounding;
  7. compound non-sterile products and document the process consistent with legislation and regulations;
  8. demonstrate best practices and efficient use of workspace and maintenance of equipment; and
  9. collaborate effectively with patients and members of the health care profession.
