ENGR 100 is an introduction to the principles of engineering design, engineering drawing and sustainable practice. This knowledge will be applied to practical projects to be undertaken by teams of learners. Learners experience integrated development and demonstrate writing, research, design and presentation skills through research and a design project.
ENGR 100 is a requirement for all students completing the First-Year Engineering Transfer program.
Prerequisites: Admission to the First-Year Engineering Transfer program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- describe unique aspects of the engineering profession and associated ethics, and identify scope and characteristics of different engineering disciplines.
- identify and describe engineering problems and the characteristics of associated solutions, with emphasis on problem solving incorporating active research capability.
- develop devices, systems, or processes to address open-ended complex problems through the adaptation and application of general iterative design techniques.
- identify and document design requirements based on stakeholder needs and constraints and solution set characteristics.
- produce a variety of design solutions and perform periodic re-evaluation of these solutions.
- draw engineering 2D sketches, orthographic sketches, isometric sketches and 3D perspective sketches using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) tools.
- choose amongst alternative design solutions by applying specific engineering knowledge combined with critical, analytical and integrative techniques.
- work effectively as members of a team whose characteristics include a diversity of world-views and working and learning preferences.
- identify the role of engineers in design teams, with emphasis on professional behavior and responsibilities.
- apply the writing process for writing tasks: identify purpose, plan, outline, draft, revise, edit, and proofread, utilizing well-structured sentences and paragraphs in correct standard English.
- use a variety of resources to support literacy skill development, including critical review and feedback of both self-generated work product and that of others.
- prepare and deliver effective technical poster presentations, oral and PowerPoint presentations, and technical reports.
- use task-based writing styles for different purposes including emails and technical memos.
