GNUR 403 Interpersonal Communications

GNUR 403 Interpersonal Communications focuses on the development of self-awareness, increased understanding of others and development of effective interpersonal communication skills all of which can be used in a variety of care giving contexts. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the impact of their own communication choices and patterns. They will have opportunity to develop and use communication techniques that demonstrate personal awareness, respect and active listening skills. Students will have an opportunity to examine and utilize problem solving and critical thinking techniques as well as define and apply best practices related to crucial conversations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. examine the characteristics and qualities that lead to effective interpersonal communication.
  2. model effective interpersonal communication skills.
  3. utilize critical thinking, reflective listening and effective reasoning skills; analyze the relationship between self-awareness, self-esteem and perception as they relate to personal communication choices and patterns.
  4. make use of self-reflection and self-appraisal techniques in order to enhance one’s communication skills.
  5. define high stakes communication and recognize when a conversation has become crucial.
