GNUR 411 Introduction to Nursing Leadership is a dynamic course for new and aspiring nurse leaders in Canada. Learners will develop strong interpersonal and team building skills while exploring their own personal philosophy of leadership. Students will focus on and develop skills to manage conflict in the workplace, build team performance, collaborate effectively with others, problem solve, and manage change while pursuing personal improvement and development as future leaders in the health care system.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- describe nursing leadership competencies as outlined by the CNA and BCCNP and determine how they translate into the work of nurses in various roles and work environments.
- analyze the pros and cons of the most common broad leadership styles, traits, and qualities.
- distinguish differences and similarities between leadership, management, and followership, and discuss how these roles interrelate.
- identify the critical principles and practices that contribute to effective team functioning.
- demonstrate competency in the application of principles and practices related to effective team building.
- describe how change theory informs the role of the nurse as a ‘change agent’.
- identify how micro and macro cultures develop and influence the change process in positive and negative ways.
- define the characteristics, principles, and practices of transformational leadership and describe the relevance of this specific type of leadership in nursing practice.
- utilize self-reflection to identify and respond to personal leadership competency development needs.
