HSER 258 Fundamentals of Change I

HSER 258 Fundamentals of Change 1 is designed to assist the student to develop self-awareness as a helper and to develop both an understanding and a beginning level of skill. Students are required to participate in exercises, role plays, simulations and video taping in interviews and counselling in order to accomplish the course objectives.

Prerequisites: ENGL 110.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. describe professional ethics and the core values of counselling.
  2. demonstrate an understanding of the helping relationship and core conditions for counselling to be effective.
  3. demonstrate active listening and action-phase skills within the framework of the four phase model of counselling.
  4. define the components of listening for understanding.
  5. describe the importance of asking questions and demonstrate effective use of questions in practice.
  6. define what is meant by empathy and demonstrate the types of empathic responses.
  7. demonstrate an understanding of the importance of counsellor objectivity and self-awareness.
  8. engage in self-reflection through journal writing
  9. choose a wellness practice for self-care.
