CHEM 122 General Chemistry I

CHEM 122 General Chemistry I is an introductory general chemistry course leading into science or engineering programs for students who have a solid chemistry background, including Chemistry 12 or equivalent. After a short review of fundamental chemistry, classical and quantum mechanical concepts are used to discuss atomic and molecular structure. The course ends with an investigation of intermolecular forces in liquids and solids. The lab work stresses scientific observations and measurements using chemical syntheses and quantitative analyses.

Prerequisites: Chemistry 12 or CHEM 110 and Pre-calculus 11, or equivalent with a minimum of 60%. Pre-calculus 12 or equivalent is recommended.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Apply a variety of problem-solving strategies in familiar and unfamiliar situations
  2. Write clear, complete and concise answers, showing units and correct significant figures
  3. Visualize matter on the subatomic and molecular scale
  4. Represent matter symbolically, including writing formulae for substances and producing balanced chemical equations
  5. Relate the amounts of substances mathematically, using stoichiometry
  6. Predict periodic properties of elements using knowledge of atomic structure
  7. Predict properties such as polarity from molecular structure
  8. Represent the bonding in covalent compounds in terms of the overlap of hybrid atomic orbitals
  9. Recognize the type of intermolecular forces within liquids and solids, and use this knowledge to predict physical properties
  10. Follow written laboratory procedures with minimal guidance
  11. Use laboratory equipment such as burets, pipets, volumetric flasks, and spectrophotometers
  12. Demonstrate critical thinking to reach conclusions based on experimental data
  13. Exhibit professional behaviors such as respect for colleagues, punctuality, willingness to think independently, and pride in presentation of work
