MHAD 500 Mental Health and Addictions I is an introduction to the study of mental health and addiction problems from a lifespan perspective, with a special focus on aging populations. The course examines a spectrum of mental-health and substance-use problems pertinent to men and women over 50 years of age from a recovery oriented perspective. A case-based approach is used to highlight the biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of mental-health and substance use problems that may occur as people grow older.
Prerequisites: Completion of Year 1 of the Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss the developmental challenges that occur at various stages along the life trajectory and how they may increase vulnerability to mental health and substance use problems
- Utilize concepts such as risk and protective factors to assess the choices and behaviors of people with mental-health and substance-use problems across the life span
- Explain the interplay of bio-psycho-social-spiritual factors that occur specifically in relation to aging, and how they may either protect against or increase risk of mental health and substance use problems
- Identify specific mental illnesses and substance-use problems and discuss how they are most likely to manifest in women and men between 50 and 85 years of age
