PHYS 60 Physics - Provincial Level further develops physics' core concepts, building upon introductory material. In this course students explore the nature, scope, relevance and limitations of physics. Students will study two-dimensional kinematics and dynamics, electrostatics, electromagnetism, waves and optics. Upon completion of this course, students are ready to enter further post-secondary studies in physics. This course qualifies for the BC Adult Graduation Diploma. This course is equivalent to Physics 12.

Prerequisites: Recommended PHYS 50 and MATH 50 or equivalent skills

- Kinematics in Two Dimensions
a. use the language and concepts of kinematics to describe motion in two dimensions.
b. resolve, add and subtract vectors.
c. analyze and solve kinematics in two dimensions.
- Dynamics in Two Dimensions
a. use the language and concepts of dynamics to describe forces, energy and momentum.
b. analyze and solve dynamics in two dimensions using free body diagrams
i. two-dimensional equilibrium – translational and rotational
ii. momentum in two dimensions
iii. energy conservation
iv. uniform circular motion.
- Electrostatics
a. use the language and concepts of physics to describe electrostatic phenomena.
b. analyze and solve electrostatic forces and electric fields in two dimensions.
c. analyze and solve electric potential and electric potential energy.
- Electromagnetism
a. use the language and concepts of physics to describe electromagnetic phenomena
b. analyze and solve problems involving magnetic forces and magnetic fields in two dimensions
c. analyze and solve problems involving electromagnetic induction – Faraday’s Law and Lenz’s law
d. describe devices that operate using electromagnetic induction.
- Waves and Optics
a. use the language and concepts of physics to describe wave phenomena.
b. define and distinguish between amplitude, wavelength, frequency, wave speed and period.
c. analyze and solve problems involving wave phenomena – refraction, reflection, total internal reflection.
d. describe various wave phenomena and the conditions which produce them.
e. construct ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses.

- Laboratories:
There should be one laboratory from each topic and a minimum of seven laboratories. Laboratory skills must include:
a. collecting data through observation:
i. record a measurement to the appropriate level of precision; and
ii. recognize that all measured values have an uncertainty.
b. constructing graphs:
i. choose appropriate scales
ii. determine line of best fit
iii. label correctly.
c. drawing conclusions from observations and data:
i. identify and discuss sources of error
ii. calculate and interpret the slope of a line
iii. relate conclusions to objectives.
d. calculating experimental error:
i. determine % error and % difference where appropriate.
e. completing formal lab reports.
