PNUR 108 Professional Communication II provides learners with an opportunity to develop professional communication skills with older adults and clients requiring end-of-life care. Interprofessional communication knowledge and skills are further developed.

Course Concepts
Course outcomes will be met through examination and exploration of the following:
• Professional communication with the older adult:
o Exhibiting sensory deficits.
o Exhibiting language deficits.
o Exhibiting cognitive deficits.
o Exhibiting aggression.
o Exhibiting ineffective non-verbal approaches.
o Resolving conflict.
o Coordinating actions of others during an emergency.
o Problem solving and decision making.
o Adapting communication skills appropriate to the client.
• Relational practice with the older adult:
o Establishing trust.
o Honouring diversity.
o Showing cultural competency.
o Displaying care and respect.
o Making environmental adaptations for the older adult with cognitive challenges.
o Dealing with agitation and aggressive behaviours effectively with cognitively intact individuals and those with cognitive challenges.
o Sharing information with family in a respectful, understandable manner.
• Interprofessional communication:
o Communicating client information appropriately to health care team members.
o Using effective communication tools (e.g., SBAR).
o Directing unregulated care providers with client care.
o Sharing knowledge with unregulated providers and learners.
o Managing conflict.
o Managing change.
Prerequisites: PNUR 106 and successful completion of all Level 1 courses with a minimum of 70%.

- explore strategies to give and receive feedback effectively with other health team members.
- identify leadership style and how that may impact relationships with other health team members and clients.
- explain the relationship of communication and culture.
- identify challenges preventing effective communication across cultures.
