PTEC 103 Introduction to Professional Practice introduces students to the professional practice and scope of practice requirements for pharmacy technicians. Foundations for federal and provincial laws, regulations and standards that govern pharmacy practice in the Canadian health care system are examined. Foundations for ethical, professional practice are introduced and leveled in subsequent courses.

- describe the pharmacy technician professional practice role with an emphasis on scope of practice and code of ethics and model standards for pharmacy technicians.
- outline pharmacy-based guidelines for ethical practice and ethical decision making.
- identify the roles of the intra and inter professional members of healthcare teams in Canada in relation to pharmacy practice.
- summarize basic components of federal and provincial legislation that guide pharmacy practice.
- outline legislation sections that guide federal and provincial drug distribution requirements.
- describe professional practice requirements for provincial pharmacy technician registration.
- identify the pharmacy role for protection of patient confidentiality and best practices for patient privacy.
