GNUR 508 Clinical Skills and the Older Adult builds on and consolidates concepts and nursing knowledge from earlier courses in the program. Participants will have the opportunity to practice relevant psychomotor skills associated with complex episodic and chronic health challenges experienced by older adults. This course will emphasize participant assessment proficiency, relevant clinical skills, documentation and relational capacity. The simulation suite will be utilized to help expand the learner's experience.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of all courses in Semester 1 and 2 of the Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Administer oral, subcutaneous, rectal and intravenous medications in a safe manner using the 7 rights of medication administration fluently
- Perform mathematical calculations to accurately prepare medication dosages
- Apply Professional Standards, Scope of Practice, and Practice Standards to activities related to medication administration
- Recognize which assessments are required prior to forming psychomotor skills and administering medications
- Demonstrate proficient implementation of psychomotor skills along with expression of rationale surrounding each step of psychomotor skill being performed
- Recognize indications for a subcutaneous butterfly and how to insert a subcutaneous butterfly following best practice standards
- Understand the theory surrounding inserting a peripheral intravenous device and demonstrate competency inserting an IV on a manikin and running an IV fluid using an IV pump
- Apply theory regarding palliative care to provide medications and appropriate care for a client with dyspnea and pain at the end-of-life
- Analyze subjective and objective assessment findings to determine course of action to care for patients with delirium
- Utilize assessment skills and practice standards to provide post-fall or post-stroke care
- Evaluate when a urinalysis and/or urine culture are indicated and how to collect a specimen correctly
- Demonstrate the ability to insert a foley catheter using best practice standards
- Demonstrate effective documentation abiding by the CRNBC’s documentation standards including documenting correctly on a medication administration record
- Demonstrate skills to interview a client/family with a focus on increasing understanding of the personal meaning of a chronic health challenge and how to best support them
- Ability to utilize assessment tools in practice to support decision making in nursing practice
