NURS 112 Professional Practice I: Introduction to the Profession of Nursing is a course where students will examine foundational perspectives and concepts of the curriculum and their relationship to the development of autonomous to nursing practice. Students explore the history of the profession of nursing and reflect upon the political, cultural, and socioeconomic forces that have influenced and are influencing the evolution of the nursing profession and contemporary nursing roles and responsibilities. Standards of nursing practice and responsibility for safe, competent, and ethical nursing practice are studied.
Prerequisites: Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Relate the curriculum foundational perspectives and concepts to the development of future professional nurses
- Examine historical influences (i.e., social, economic, political, and cultural) on contemporary roles and responsibilities of Registered Nurses
- Explore regulated, professional obligations in practice standards, scope of practice, and codes of ethics for Registered Nurses
- Apply information literacy skills to retrieve credible sources evidence for nursing practice
- Appraise the credibility of online sources to support evidence-based nursing practice
- Critically analyze professional literature to accurately identify the author’s central claim on a contemporary issue in nursing and evaluate its relevance for student nursing practice
- Recognize influences that shape one’s emerging professional identity as a Registered Nurse
- Identify contributions of local, provincial, national, and international regulatory and professional nursing organizations and ways students can become involved
- Articulate the contributions of nursing and nurses in the context of the interprofessional health care team
