GIS 329: Principles of Programming for GIS assumes no prior programming knowledge. Students will learn how to set and use variables, write and import modules, and use selection and repetition to control program flow as implemented in the Python language. At a more advanced level, students will learn to write programs that embed functions and object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts such as the use of objects, properties, and methods. Topics of scripting in Python and the usage of ESRI�s ArcPy module for the automation of geoprocessing and mapping tasks will be introduced.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- make use of control flow statements to determine a program’s order of execution;
- obtain and output GIS related data with user input and file I/O;
- select appropriate data types for variables and constants;
- develop simple to moderate programs using the Python programing language;
- make use of sound software development practices to test and debug code using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE);
- apply the fundamentals of python programming to scripting and automating the ArcGIS Desktop software package using the ArcPy Application Programming Interface (API);
- employ a wide range of Python’s feature set, including a selection of the standard library and object oriented programming, to write reusable modules and functions; and
- solve complex problems by deconstructing them into smaller atomic pieces.
