MUSC 165: History of Jazz. A survey of the music of the jazz idiom from its origins to the present. Included is a chronological study of important soloists, bands, vocalists, and composers. Classes will be partly lecture aided by video clips and partly analysis with intensive listening.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- develop an understanding of the idiom of jazz;
- learn to distinguish the different stylistic periods;
- learn the important developments of the major artist;
- learn to identify the major artist by listening;
- understand the creative developments of each period;
- understand the roles of the musical instruments; and
- understand how each instruments playing role devolved.
