HIST 60: History – Provincial Level examines the major social, economic and political movements from the late 1900's into the 21st century. Students develop an understanding of global events, from war to social movements to economic crises as presented through text, video and lecture/discussion. Students learn how global issues are interconnected geographically and politically. Skills to analyze events and to write brief synopses for presentations are developed.
This course prepares students for further studies in social sciences at the post-secondary level. This course qualifies for the BC Adult Graduation Diploma.
HIST 60 is equivalent to History 12.
Prerequisites: ENGL 50 or equivalent skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Interpret and evaluate information from artifacts, oral tradition, original documents and other primary sources.
- Explain Canada’s role and place during each period of world history
- More specifically, the learner will be able to:
1. The World at the Beginning of the Century
a) Explain the role of nationalism and imperialism leading up to Great War.
b) Discuss the role of technological change leading up to and during the course of World War I.
c) Discuss the importance and results of the Russian Revolution and civil war.
- 2. The World after World War I
a) Describe Treaty of Versailles and League of Nations and explain their importance.
b) What was the impact of war reparations on Germany?
c) Discuss rise of Japanese imperialism.
d) Discuss Indian nationalism and the problems of China in the context of imperialism.
e) What were the economic and social changes in Europe and North America in the 20’s.
- 3. The World in the 30s: Depression & Dictatorship
a) Discuss the Great Depression including its causes and consequences.
b) Explain the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party out of the Weimar Republic in Germany.
c) Discuss Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal.
d) Trace Stalin’s rise to power and modernization of Russia.

a) What were the origins and causes of World War II?
b) Discuss the events and results of World War II.
- 5. The Cold War and Reconstruction
a) Discuss the origins and major events of the Cold War.
b) What was the Iron Curtain?
c) Trace Western Europe’s move towards the European Union.
d) Discuss the rise of the Asian economies.
- 6. The Third World and China
a) Discuss the rise of the Peoples’ Republic of China.
b) Discuss the end of the European empires and its impact on Africa and Southern Asia.
c) Explain the advent of globalization.
d) Discuss the events leading to the current situation in the Middle East.
- 7. Contemporary Issues
a) Discuss the rise of fundamentalism in world religions.
b) Discuss current events in a historical context.
