PGCM 254: Human Resources Management has a profound effect on the success of tourism operations. An understanding of fundamental human resources theory and practices is necessary in the service sector where the link between the tourism operation and the guest is so critical. Innovative approaches to human resources management are necessary to recruit and retain the right people in the industry. This course focuses on the critical issues that concern managers in the tourism industry, employee relations, recruiting and selection, challenges and trends and employment standards.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- understand the importance of human resources management practices to organizational effectiveness as they relate to the service sector;
- describe the various functions of human resources management;
- describe the human resources planning process;
- describe and demonstrate current human resources department principles and practices for recruitment and selection, training, performance management, and employee development;
- describe current human resources management issues;
- use and apply the Human Rights Act and the Employment Standards Act; and
- explain the importance of the human resources department’s role in health and safety issues.
