ENVR 291 Computer Applications in Resource Management in British Columbia have become more complex and so the need for clear presentation and communication of ideas, plans, and strategies is more important than ever before. The content of ENVR 291 will address software used for the collection, assembly, display and presentation of environmental content specifically related to Forestry. Performing field data collection, importing data into ArcGIS for analysis and preparing suitable cartographic maps using ArcGIS software will be our focus.

Prerequisites: ENVR 158 and ENVR 190

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Use ArcGIS for Desktop to import field data in various formats, evaluate, interpret, display, manipulate, query, edit, join and analyze spatial data
  2. Determine the appropriate coordinate system to use in different situations, fix some basic coordinate system errors, and use ArcGIS tools related to managing coordinate system
  3. Create, manage and share geodatabases, shapefiles and other feature classes, organize data and manage GIS information
  4. Apply cartographic techniques to improve communication via maps and evaluate the effectiveness of their own map products, and export/share maps with other users
  5. Create cruise, harvest and site plan maps using Forestry specific cartographic standards as part of the larger integrated projects in the program
  6. Derive various raster datasets (e.g., slope, contour, terrain models) using LiDAR derived digital elevation models
  7. Apply basic geoprocessing tools (such as Buffer and Clip)
