AESP 280 Environmental Chemistry

AESP 280 Environmental Chemistry is an introductory environmental chemistry course designed to equip students with the foundational skills, knowledge and context to begin to assess environmental quality. The course uses water quality assessment and aqueous chemistry to explore basic concepts in chemistry and their environmental application. Laboratory exercises include field and laboratory analysis and are derived from standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater.

Prerequisites: TWC 151, MATH 160, MATH 190, ENVR 150, ENVR 160, ENVR 190

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Examine the application and social context of environmental chemistry
  2. Obtain a working knowledge of fundamentals of environmental chemistry, including: measurement fundamentals, states of matter, energy, mass/volume/density
  3. Explore basic chemistry concepts such as matter, atomic structure, chemical reactions, acids and bases, solubility, and reduction/oxidation
  4. Examine examples of chemical processes and applied environmental chemistry such as acid mine drainage, acid rain, nutrient contamination of water, hydrocarbon contamination, water quality parameters and assay techniques
  5. Develop safe and accurate environmental chemistry field and laboratory skills such as use of common field and laboratory apparatus, calibrations and dimensional analysis
  6. Carry out common analyses in water quality assessment including: nutrient, dissolved oxygen and chlorine concentration, suspended and dissolved solids, pH, alkalinity, toxicity bioassay
  7. Evaluate the significance and limitations of the measurement techniques
