IPHE 402: Physiological Function in the Aged focuses on an in-depth exploration of the normal physiological changes that occur as a result of aging and the cumulative effects of external and internal variables that increase the risk for negative functional consequences in this population. From there, students will explore the most relevant resources and approaches to care to promote health, well-being, and longevity from a specific healthcare discipline lens. This course uses Carol Miller’s Model for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults (aka “Miller’s Model”), in the development of care plans for older adults.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- describe normal or expected physiological/metabolic changes in the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, sensory, immune, integumentary and thermoregulation systems of the body as a person ages;
- describe and discuss select common chronic conditions associated with each of the above physiologic systems as they age;
- reflect on functional changes related to physiological change in aging body systems;
- identify risk factors that increase illness or disease progression;
- name and describe current treatment interventions for select chronic disease states or conditions;
- explain several compound effects of having an acute illness imposed on an aging body which has one or more chronic illnesses;
- provide responses to case studies, demonstrating application of knowledge about physiological function and/or particular chronic diseases;
- understand the normal physiological changes of the aging human body and will be able to distinguish these from abnormal symptomatology or disease.
