NURS 229: Nursing Practice IV: Promoting Health & Healing. This nursing practice experience provides opportunities for learners to develop caring relationships with individuals and families for the purpose of health promotion while coming to understand their health and healing processes when experiencing more complex health challenges, both episodic and chronic. Participants will have opportunities to practice nursing approaches that accompany this understanding. Participants work with families and individuals in acute care medical settings to incorporate concepts and learning from all courses in this semester into their nursing practice. The community and society are considered as contextual influences on the promotion of health for the individual and the family.
Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Year 1 courses.
Corequisite: Year 2 Nursing Courses

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- apply theory from studies in Health and Healing, Relational Practice, Ethics, Pathophysiologic, Microbiologic, and Pharmacologic Concept Application, elective courses and previous practice courses to their nursing practice in an acute care medical setting;
- demonstrate safe, professional nursing practice;
- apply principles of teaching and learning in the context of client and family education;
- apply critical thinking, clinical judgment, organizational and decision-making skills when caring for clients in a variety of situations;
- identify appropriate rationale when performing psychomotor skills;
- perform psychomotor skills safely and skillfully;
- practice their communication techniques in order to communicate effectively with their clients, peers, members of the health care team and their nursing instructor;
- adapt their approach to client assessments in order to effectively assess clients in a variety of situations; and
- the learner will engage in inter-professional practice with a variety of disciplines to provide safe nursing care.
Additional Assessment Notes: A grade of Credit or No Credit will be determined by the Selkirk College nursing instructor. Consistent satisfactory performance and attendance is required to achieve a grade of Credit.
