NURS 226: Health and Healing IV: Health Challenges/Healing Initiatives is about building on the learners' understanding of health, the focus of this course is on people's experience with healing for both chronic and episodic health challenges. Participants integrate theory and concepts of health as they relate to healing. This course is complementary to Health Sciences IV and provides opportunities for learners to integrate pathophysiology with their understanding of health and healing and the nursing approaches that accompany this understanding.
Prerequisites: Promotion from Semester III to Semester IV.
Corequisite: Year 2 Nursing courses

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- identify which assessments are required when performing psychomotor skills;
- distinguish assessment components of breathlessness and non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical treatment options;
- distinguish assessment components and potential complications of diabetes and non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical treatment options;
- distinguish assessment components of the surgical client;
- describe characteristics of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care
- identify and distinguish nursing care associated with labour, delivery and postpartum;
- identify, assessment components and non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical treatment options for the following health challenges: cardiovascular disease, bowel disease, reproductive cancer, communicable disease, liver disease; and
- in addition to the aforementioned outcomes, learners will be able to analyze the relationship between concepts and sub-concepts in the context of the learning outcomes

- Sub-concepts: Family and individual, hardiness, resilience, vulnerability, community, environment, family, spirituality, transition, change, comfort, epidemiology, healing, healing initiatives, illness, primary health care, suffering, teaching and learning, accountability, decision making, caring, collaboration.
- demonstrate proficient implementation of psychomotor skills;
- explain rationale for each step taken during implementation of psychomotor skills; and
- perform calculations to accurately prepare medication doses;
- demonstrate skills to interview a client/family with a focus on increasing understanding of the personal meaning of a chronic health challenge;
- appraise the role of complementary and alternative healing modalities in the context of a nursing lens and culturally diverse clients;
- distinguish the meaning of chronicity in the context of chronic and episodic health challenges facing individuals and their families;
- apply Professional Standards, Scope of Practice, and Practice Standards to activities related to medication administration;
- apply teaching-learning theory and principles when teaching peers in classroom and distinguish effective printed teaching tools;
