PEAC 301: Directed Studies in Restorative Justice is an independent reading course. It allows the student to connect the principles and values of restorative justice to a particular area of interest of the student�s own choosing. The goal is to understand how an approach based on dialogue, relationship-building, healing, and social transformation can be applied to further positive social change in the student�s focus area. The outcome of this course is that the learner will develop a project proposal for their practice course, PEAC 303: Restorative Justice Practice, to be carried out in the spring-summer term.
Prerequisites: Admission to the Restorative Justice Advanced Certificate Program and PEAC 203.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- delineate a focus area and curate a reading list of appropriate scope and length for a 15-week course of directed study;
- identify and appraise potential readings as to their value to the student’s own learning about their defined focus area;
- articulate the core principles of restorative justice as they relate to their area of focus;
- describe the current restorative justice practices that are being implemented in their area of focus; and
- identify a suitable forum and/or opportunity in the community for hands-on learning around the application of restorative/transformative principles to the student’s area of focus (i.e., a placement or project for PEAC 303).
