Earth Science and Engineering (ErSE)

In the Earth Science and Engineering (ErSE) program at KAUST, Faculty, Researchers and Students engage in interdisciplinary research to understand and model geophysical and geological processes of our complex dynamic planet. The ErSE curriculum provides courses that constitute a graduate-level education in Earth Sciences, including Geophysical Fluids and Climate System Science, Geophysics, Geology, and Machine Learning in Geosciences.

The program offers opportunities for MS and PhD students to focus on modern computational and advanced data analysis methods, and laboratory and field experiments to tackle geoscience challenges. Students in the program receive broad training in numerical methods, mathematical modeling, geophysics, and geology. MS students interested in Geophysical Fluids and Climate System Science focus on flow and transport processes both above and beneath the Earth's surface, including ocean and atmospheric circulation, and flow in subsurface porous media. Students with an interest in Geophysics focus on seismology, geophysics, geodynamics, and geomechanics. Those interested in Geology can focus on courses in (carbonate) sedimentology and stratigraphy, petrology/geochemistry and structural geology. MS students interested in Machine Learning in Geosciences can focus on the fundamentals of machine learning (ML) methods and their applications to geoscience problems. PhD candidates in the program conduct original and impactful research to advance the boundary of knowledge in topics that include those listed above.
