ECCE 189 Responsive Child-Centered Environments II

ECCE 189: Responsive Child-Centred Environments II builds on the concepts and theories of ECCE 188 with an emphasis on play theory, social relationships and skills, and creative and cognitive processes in children ages three to six years. Learners examine the interface of adults and children in a child-centred environment. Students learn ways of supporting and extending the interests, understandings and problem-solving abilities of young children in the areas of mathematics, science and social studies. The focus will extend to the programming context with a holistic approach to the practitioner as planner and adult within the play environment and address variations in development, abilities, issues, and risk factors.

Prerequisites: ECCE 188 with a minimum �C� grade

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. describe theories of behaviour, including play theory, social relationships and skills and creative and cognitive processes in children ages three to six years;
  2. describe variations in development among children and appreciating the range and uniqueness of children’s varying development, abilities, issues, and risk factors;
  3. explain how cultural, ethnic, attitudinal, and economic factors have implications for each child’s development patterns;
  4. describe ways to provide respectful and responsive individualized care and communication with young children;
  5. link theories of learning and development of the preschool child to planning opportunities which will facilitate the growth of all children within the least restrictive physically and emotionally safe environments;
  6. enhance children’s self-worth and appreciation of others through program planning which supports social relationships and reflects and respects diversity;
  7. balance the role of the adult in facilitating child-centred, play-based developmentally appropriate practice with capitalizing upon teachable moments in designing flexible and responsive routines and experiences;
  8. ensure a healthy, nurturing, and caring atmosphere for all individuals, groups, and families; and
  9. express self-awareness and reflective practice.
