PGHM 161: Accommodation Management: This course is intended to introduce the learner to the general principles of managing the accommodation facility of a hotel or resort. The complete guest cycle is covered beginning with the reservation request through to the final accounting documentation. Other topics include: different types of lodging, current trends in guest services, competitive tactics that hotels and resorts use in their services and amenities, the important features of condominium and timeshare operations, security and safety issues relevant to areas of the lodging industry and contingencies and plans for emergencies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. describe the different uses of lodging for business travelers, conventioneers and travelling families and tourists;
  2. develop an understanding of the accounting procedures and controls in the front office;
  3. prepare a night audit manually; and
  4. identify current trends in guest services.
  5. identify and describe the organizational structure of the accommodations sector;
  6. describe and differentiate levels of service provided by economy, mid-scale, up-scale, and luxury accommodation;
  7. describe competitive tactics that hotels use in their services and amenities;
  8. describe reservation systems and procedures;
  9. identify and describe accessibility components and procedures for guests with special needs;
  10. describe the function of all the departments in a hotel and the role of the front desk;
  11. describe the procedures and equipment used by the front office through the guest cycle, from the original reservation to departure and guest history;
  12. apply terminology and basic concepts related to front desk operations;
