PGHM 150: Introduction to Tourism provides an overview of the tourism industry, examining the interrelationships between the tourism sectors as well as the economic, environmental, cultural, and social impacts of tourism. Topics include the following: Industry definitions, sectors within the tourism industry, motivational/demographic differences, economic and social impacts, career opportunities, ethical issues, and the role of tourism organizations.

  2. Discuss the potential sociocultural impacts of tourism on a host country/region, including the potential tensions between hosts and visitors.
  3. Identify and discuss why people do and do not travel.
  4. Explain the difference between business and leisure tourists.
  5. Describe the process through which people are motivated to travel. Also, list other factors, in addition to motivation, that influence the behavior of travelers.
  6. Describe the effects and impact of the family life cycle stages on travel decision making.
  7. Explain the roles of the Federal and Provincial Governments in the tourism segment.
  8. Describe professional and industry organizations and associations that impact the industry.
  9. Discuss the history of tourism.
  10. Explain the tourism sectors and their interrelationship within the tourism industry.
  11. Discuss trends and the history associated with the eight tourism sectors.
  12. Discuss reasons for growth in tourism.
  13. Discuss the future of tourism.
  14. Explain the economic impact of tourism on a destination country/region.
