PTEC 117: Fundamentals of Product Distribution provides an introduction to pharmacy language, drug dosage forms, routes of administration, and techniques and procedures required to implement safe and efficient drug distribution. Students explore drug distribution systems and the path of a prescription / drug order for release of product. Students access resources to support evidence-informed decision-making. Factors that contribute to errors in product distribution are examined and actions to prevent occurrence are discussed.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- apply medical terms, abbreviations and symbols used in prescribing, dispensing and pharmacy record management;
- utilize drug references to accurately identify generic and brand name drugs and support evidence informed decision making;
- explain advantages and disadvantages of commonly used dosage forms, routes of administration, and delivery system;
- describe the path of a prescription order and steps required prior to its release as required by legislation and regulatory bodies;
- distinguish between drug distribution systems in the community and hospital settings that promote patient safety;
- identify an efficient pharmacy workflow with emphasis on safety for effective product distribution; and
- identify common medication incidents, contributing factors, and actions to prevent occurrence.
