PTEC 103 Introduction to Professional Practice

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. describe the evolution of and current scope of practice for Pharmacy Technicians;
2. identify practices that protect patient privacy.
3. identify the roles of the pharmacy technician and the pharmacist within the pharmacy environment and as members of the inter-professional health care team;
4. examine the role of professional practice within legal requirements, Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics;
5. outline major components of federal and provincial legislation that guide Pharmacy Practice in Canada and the role of Health Canada;
6. identify prescription, purchasing and record keeping requirements and federal legislation using the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and Regulations;
7. explain the application of National Drug Schedules in pharmacy practice;
8. describe the relationship between provincial regulatory body associations and the scope of practice for Pharmacy Technicians from the NAPRA (2011) Pharmacy Technician Model Standards of Practice;
9. examine ethical principles and the standards of professional practice for Pharmacy Technicians;
10. define patient confidentiality; and
