PTEC 123: Professional Practice II is designed to expand the student's understanding of and appreciation for the expectations of professional practice. Building on concepts introduced in PTEC 103, students discuss ethical and legal principles that guide professional practice and how to respond when unethical, illegal or unprofessional actions are observed. The student will examine the role of legislative and regulatory requirements in the application of drug schedules and evidence informed decision making. Basic principles of teaching and learning will be applied to support health promotion and information sharing activities.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- examine ethical principles including respect for patient rights to quality care, autonomy in informed decision-making and dignity;
- apply ethical decision-making and critical thinking in response to perceived illegal, unethical or professional misconduct;
- discuss the role of the legal and regulatory authorities in addressing illegal, unethical, and unprofessional behaviours;
- explore the concept of drug diversion/misuse and strategies the pharmacy technician can take to minimize occurrence;
- recognize the importance of personal and professional accountability, lifelong learning and planning for continuing competence;
- identify factors that act as facilitators and barriers to effective health teaching and information sharing; and
- access appropriate technologies and web-based resources to support evidence informed decision making and best practices.
